Mile Building Cruises
MILE BUILDING CRUISES FOR ASA / RYA
STUDENTS.
Unless you are a full time sailor,
accumulating sea miles in your ASA / RYA
log book can be a long and expensive
process. To progress to the next level
sea miles are what count.
Our
mile building cruises are designed to
help you gain confidence in handling a
larger yacht. They will enable you to
sail in areas where the sun shines and
there is no need for thermals and wet
weather gear. Best of all, you get the
chance to visit the Greek Islands and
gain sea miles at the same time.
In a weeks normal
charter you cover a
relatively short
distance, spending a lot
of time relaxing and
swimming. With our Mile
building cruises you
will undertake
qualifying passages for
your ASA / RYA
certificates. Distances
of over 60nm non stop as
well as night sails will
be the order of the day.
You will learn about
sailing in a watch
system, cooking at sea,
and the fun of sailing
in open waters. The
trips have no official
syllabus so you will be
part of an active crew,
working and living
together. If you have an
ASA / RYA skippers
certificate then you
will be given the chance
to be responsible for
the running of the
yacht, under the
supervision of the
instructor.
Even though you will be
sailing for most of the
time, when in port you
will have ample
opportunity to explore
the islands you visit.

So who
qualifies for these Trips ?
Actually just
about any one. Obviously if you have an
ASA / RYA certificate and want to gain
more experience and sea miles then these
cruises are ideal. But on the other hand
if you are an able bodied individual
with a sense of Adventure and want to
experience some thing a little different
then this may also be for you too !!
About the only
concern you will need to consider is if
you get sea sick easily. These trips
will be in open waters where the sea can
get rough, and you will loose sight of
land.

|
The
cruise will take you down into the Cyclades
group. This island group is infamous for its
strong winds and rolling seas. It is ideal for
those who need to learn about handling a
performance yacht in real weather conditions.
You will be sailing on a 55ft performance ketch.
The yacht was an old IOR racer that has been
converted to more comfortable pursuits. She is
fast and being a ketch offers the sailor an
endless combination of sail configurations.
On deck she is all
business, sailing handling is a full time
operation. Down below she is warm and
comfortable with all of the comforts one would
expect to find in a luxury yacht.

|

Your
trip will take you south down past the
famous Cape Sounion and the temple of
Poseidon and on to the island of Kea. From
here you will continue south to the island
of Paros, before heading west to the island
of Serifos. From here you will start back to
Athens, sailing across the gulf to Spetsai
island before heading north towards Athens.
|
So what is
included and what should I expect ?
In a nut shell
expect to sail a lot, and cover miles. By
the end of your week you should have logged
around 250-300 miles. There will be at least
one night sail and several legs will be over
60nm.
Expect to learn
about sailing a performance yacht fast, you
will learn how to steer her at speed, off
and on the wind. You will learn about sail
changes and spinnaker flying. You will have
the chance to practice your navigation
skills in a very modern navigation station.
In short expect to be part of a very active
crew. To help you though all of this there
will be 2 fully qualified
captain/instructors on board.
