Yacht racing has for a long time been a sport that has challenged the masses. For many years it has been the sport of the rich and famous. However, to day it is possible to charter a fully equipped race yacht and go racing. That's assuming you know all about the racing rules and how to manoeuvre one of these complex machines.
So how about becoming part of a crew that
races in the Aegean Summer series. The ASA along with Athens Sailing Academy is offering the opportunity for sailors to participate in these prestigious events. The yacht you will Crew on is a 55ft performance Ketch designed by the French naval architect Guy Ribadeau-Dumas. KORALIA3 was built in the French yard of Jeanneau 1990. The yacht has the pedigree to be competitive on the race-course and is able to highlight well any sailor who wishes to see themselves in the winner’s circle. The Aegean Rally is a well-covered media event, both on television and on the radio. There will be 10 crewing places available for each event. These are events are for people who enjoy or wish to experience offshore yacht racing, as crew you will sail between 300 - 400 miles. You will play a full part in sailing the yacht, including navigation, keeping watch, and taking a turn in the galley. You will have ASA Instructors on hand to help you should you require advice. Although aimed at the more experienced sailor, it is possible for members who have passed their ASA 101 to join these events. |

DETAILS OF ISLANDS THAT THE RACE REGATTAS WILL VISIT.
AUGUST 18 - 23...2012
The Joy of the Greek Islands.
Islands and race course for the Aegean Regatta August 2012
LESVOS ISLAND
The town of Mytilene, which lies on the south-eastern coast of the island, is a modern town with many elements from the past. It is the island capital and the chair of the Prefecture of Lesbos; an administrative, commercial and cultural centre with a population of 40.000.
Present-day Mytilene occupies seven hills, while its fortress, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, lies on a pine-covered hillock to the east of the town.
What is remarkable about the hillock is that, up until the 1st century AD, it comprised a separate island. Later, the sea distance separating it from the adjacent town of Mytilene was gradually eliminated by soil deposits which formed banks ; thus the town expanded westward. There is evidence that the isle of Mytilene was linked to the opposite coasts via bridges during the classical times. A channel, the opening of which was found in the Epano Skala district, linked the northern and southern port.
CHIOS ISLAND,
Oinousses (Greek: Οινούσσες), alternative forms: Egnoussa is a barren cluster of 1 larger and 8 smaller islands some 2 km off the north-east coast of the Greek island of Chios and 8 km west of Turkey.
Administratively the islands form a municipality within the Chios which is part of the North Aegean Periphery.
The principal town of the islands and seat of the municipality is also called Oinousses. Oinousses has a small resident population, living primarily in the islands' town of Oinoússes (pop. 999), and a recently built monastery.
The town is centred around a square (plateia) and a small port; it includes a school, several churches, a Naval high school and a maritime museum. The only other populated settlements are Kástron (pop. 32) and Aspalathrókampos (19).
The vast majority of the workforce of the island is engaged in seafaring, fishing and goat-herding.
The second part of the Regatta is the leg around the North part of Chios that will take the Fleet to the port of Volissos.
Volissos is located appr. 40 kilometres north from chios-city. Volisos is one of the oldest villages in the north-western region of the island and is the capital city of this district. In Volissos remains of castles from both the Byzantine period and Genoese period can be found. They were built here because of its location at the hill site and yet close to the sea it was the perfect place to watch over the Aegean sea. And protect the island for possible invaders. These castles can still be visited and are constructed in the typical Byzantine style. In the historic times it is said that homer was a school teacher at Volissos. The hey days of Volissos started after the middle ages. When many high rank military officers chose to life in this city. In this time the area was filled with vineyards and produced some of the best wine of the island.
